The annulus problem, using a von Karman membrane model

These notes supplement Robert Kohn’s Lecture 3 at the 2014 PCMI Graduate Summer School. For background and heuristic arguments, see the pdf of that lecture. For upper and lower energy bounds similar to those presented here but using nonlinear elasticity and a rather general membrane model see [1]. We want to study deformations of a ...

Global Attractors for Nonlinear Beam Equations

This paper is concerned with the dynamics for nonlinear one-dimensional beam equations. We consider a nonlinear beam equation with viscosity or with a lower order damping term instead of the viscosity, and we establish the existence of global attractors for both systems. Exact Nonlinear Model Reduction for a von Karman beam: Slow-Fast Decomposition and Spectral Submanifolds

We apply two recently formulated mathematical techniques, Slow-Fast Decomposition (SFD) and Spectral Submanifold (SSM) reduction, to a von Kármán beam with geometric nonlinearities and viscoelastic damping. SFD identifies a global slow manifold in the full system which attracts solutions at rates faster than typical rates within the manifold. An SSM, the smoothest nonlinear continuation of a li...

A Lagrangian for von Karman equations of large deflection problem of thin circular plate

By the semi-inverse method proposed by He, a Lagrangian is established for the large deflection problem of thin circular plate. Ritz method is used to obtain an approximate analytical solution of the problem. First order approximate solution is obtained, which is similar to those in open literature. By Mathematica a more accurate solution can be deduced. 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights re...
